Aeneas in Aeneid

Character of Aeneas
Aeneas survived hardships throughout his life. He survived the battle of Troy and fought for people other than himself. He is a kind character that protects others, especially his father and son. Aeneas is the protagonist in the story of Aeneid. Many may believe that Aeneas and the Trojans were trying to run away after the war and escape their problems, but I believe he decided to start over after the war. He decided to sail on a ship with his fellow Trojans in order to find a fresh start. Throughout the Aeneid, Aeneas listens and praises the Gods. Although he went through many hardships, his faith may have helped him throughout the Aeneid. I do not agree with Charles James Fox, in that Aeneas was "either insipid or odious." Aeneas went through many events that were far from bland and boring.  Aeneas was more of a hero than a priest, which is what William Butler Yeats beloved he was. He is a leader which has priest like qualities.

Comparison between Achilles and Odysseus
Both Aeneas and Odysseus show courage and determination despite what they have gone through in the past. They both fought for the people in the battle of Troy. They are also both on a long quest that includes obstacles that they must overcome.

Achilles also fought in the battle of Troy, but it was more for himself. Achilles and Aeneas have different personalities and goals, but both have goddesses as a mother.
